Historic Sites and Scenic Areas - Iron County

Johnson Fort

To the Spanish Padres and pioneer wagons, Johnson Springs and Johnson Fort were solace for both humans and their animals. Abundant grassland, and ample water made the site truly a gem, worth searching for.
Originally, this was a point of rest for travelers of The Old Spanish Trail, near Enoch, Utah.

Joel H. Johnson first settled at the site in 1851. In 1854 a fort of clay walls 21/2 feet thick was built for protection. As time moved on a mail station between Milford, Utah and Silver Reefs, Utah was established. Cottonwood trees still living mark the location of the Johnson Fort even now.

At Enoch Road turn left and go about 1 mile to an old church. Go west on 5250 North for ½ mile and a monument on the right side of the road tells the story of the Johnson Fort.
