Expedition of Dominquez Escalante

Expedition of Dominquez - Escalante Trail

Arriving in 1776 Spaniards from southwest Mexico ventured into the unexplored Escalante Valley in the southern Utah area.
Dominquez and Escalante started from Santa Fe, New Mexico traveling to the Pacific in Monterey, California.

Encountering an early winter they were forced to turn back to Santa Fe, New Mexico passing nearby Cedar City, Utah.

Just west of Kannaraville, Utah between mile marker 44 and 45 ant the rest stop of Interstate15 is a monument dedicated to these early explorers.
