Seeking a northern route to Monterey, California from Santa Fe, New Mexico a Spanish Franciscan Missionary, explorer Father Silvestre Valez de Escalante and Francisco Dominquez set out in 1776 - 1777.

Grand Canyon
Escalante' plan was to take 14 men and travel north. The Grand Canyon in Arizona was too big to cross. They would have to go north until they could get across it.

Casting Lots
Turning south they trudged on. Just north of present day Cedar City, Utah the expedition turned west. Thinking this would take them directly to California.

Marble Canyon
