Marble Canyon

Marble Canyon

Twice freezing snow stopped them. They were able to build a fire and huddle around it to survive. With their provisions gone and if not for their horses they would have starved to death in the Sierra Nevada's. Finding a place out of the snow they rested. After a weeks journey they crossed the north end of Kibab Plateau, Arizona.

Descending into House Rock Valley and Vermillion Cliffs, Utah they arrived at the Poria River. Traveling another eleven days to reach the Colorado River, they crossed it near Marble Canyon. Now called "The Crossing to the Father"

The Dominquez - Escalante expedition arrived in Santa Fe, New Mexico on January 2, 1777 the expedition had traveled for six months. At no time were they even close to the goal in California. Instead a huge rambling 2,000-mile circle through the Great Basin Desert and the mountains of the west. The suffering they would remember for a lifetime.

Yet the expedition was not called a failure. No direct link was established with California but the interior west at last had been explored. The journals and maps that Dominquez and Escalalante had in their possession would be invaluable to those who would follow them. Opening what would be called The Old Spanish Trail 40 years later.
