Grand Staircase

This is a vast area of sandstone canyons, plateaus, unique rock formations, and cliffs in southern Utah.

The 1.7 million acres of desert became a National Monument in 1996. The Escalante National Monument extends eastward from Bryce Canyon National Park to Capital Reef, and the Glen Canyon National Recreation area. It borders the Dixie National Forest on the north and extends southward to the Arizona State Line.

The Escalante National Monument is partly named of the Escalante River, which flows from Boulder Mountain to the Colorado River. Deep canyons on gorges have been carved over eons of time. Sandstone with unusual rock shapes and slot canyons offer some of the best hiking and backpacking in the world.

The Escalante National Monument is a natural treasure of wildlife and plant life.

The Escalante National Monument was home to the Anasazi Indians and remains of the civilization are scattered throughout the area.

Be sure to stop at the Anasazi Indian Village State Park in Boulder, Utah.
Tour and museums exhibits have many interesting artifacts.
